According to the Ontario Ministry of Health, immunizations for COVID-19 and flu will begin in phases for high-risk and priority groups, including seniors over the age of 65, starting the week of September 22, 2025.If you are under 65 years of age and are part of the general public population (i.e. you are not part of any of the high-risk and priority groups), then the free flu and COVID-19 shots will be available for you starting October 14 and October 27, respectively. And just a reminder that the COVID-19 vaccines are safe and can be given alongside the flu shot or other immunizations (Source: Ontario Ministry of Health), so you can save yourself multiple trips to the pharmacy or vaccine clinic.

A Note on The 2025/2026 Covid-19 Vaccine

With the respiratory illness season underway, seniors aged 65 and older in Toronto are encouraged to get their COVID-19 vaccine to maintain strong protection against severe outcomes from the virus. The vaccine formulations have been updated for 2025/2026 to better combat current COVID-19 variants such as the XFG strain, which is key, especially for older adults and persons with underlying medical conditions (Source: CBC).

Additional Vaccines and Protection

In addition to flu and COVID-19 vaccines, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines are offered for seniors aged 60 and older with certain high-risk conditions, enhancing protection during the respiratory virus season. We wrote an article about this last flu season and you can read it here: “Cold & Flu Season: Understanding the immune system and Different Vaccine Options”
