As per website:

Welcome to The Art of Making Joyful Art, Arts Etobicoke’s 8-week Seniors Paid Program at Cloverdale Mall.

This course will offer a balance of technical skills as well as insight into the mindset required to make joyful art. Easing in with basic and FUN drawing exercises we will explore how to observe and describe – without judgment and “see” how we approach art with our own unique perspective. A fundamental skill in making art is understanding value. We will be doing a value study in each class looking at the work of Etel Adnan, Kandinsky, Johanne Itten and Vasarely among others. We will learn to make thumbnail sketches and black and white doodles to awaken our creativity. Darlene will bring in something that she is working on to better understand her step by step process. Each class time will be spent on developing a painting either from your own reference, a famous artist or copying/adapting my style.

NOTE: We will work in an environment that feels comfortable to share, learn and be creative in. There will be feedback to facilitate learning.

#ExperienceTO: Runnymede Historical Tour by Alex Roscanu

As per Eventbrite:

About Runnymede's history: The name Runnymede originates with the estate of John Scarlett, an early land owner in the area. (If we go further back in history, we notice that Runnymede, England was the site of the sealing of the Magna Carta, the 'Great Charter of Freedoms'. Sealed in 1215 by King John, the Magna Carta aimed to bring England's sovereigns under the rule of law and was the foundation for the country's legal system.) John Scarlett owned land in the area as early as 1817, and he gave the name Runnymede to his house on Dundas Street. In 1856, Scarlett's holdings bounded by Jane, St. Clair, Clendenan and Annette were purchased by Marcus Rossin, who sub-divided the lands as the Runnymede Estate.

Join us for a FREE, public walking tour that will be a good experience for anyone: whether you’re 8 or 80 years old, and whether you’re a curious local, solo traveler, backpacker, part of a small groups of friends, or a newcomer.

Lest We Forget: From Internment to Compassion Artist Talk with Loretta Faveri

As per website:

“Artist talk with Loretta Faveri exploring how personal experiences shape her creativity — themes of self-compassion, forgiveness and healing

In this talk on Remembrance Day, artist Loretta Faveri will share stories of how her personal experiences transformed her artistic practice, through themes of self-compassion and forgiveness.. She will explore how art can help us confront the fears of the past while fostering empathy, compassion, and healing in the present.

Through projects like “Captured Moments”, Faveri explores the link between memory, resilience, and art—offering space for both personal expression and community participation. Faveri also reflects on the internment of Italian Canadians during WWII, its impact on her own family, and its relevance to current global events.

Guests will be invited to take part in the “Lest We Forget” installation by writing or drawing on Japanese paper and tearing and stitching the pieces into a 14’ x 3’ fishing net—collectively weaving a tapestry that holds our memories, our pain, and our compassion.

Bio – Loretta Faveri

Loretta Faveri is a fibre artist and dancer based in Toronto and Grey County, Ontario. She studied textile design at OCAD University, where she specialized in surface design, wearable electronics, and sculpture. Her award-winning thesis, Chance, was an interactive project featuring belly dance costumes embedded with SOMO (SOund & MOvement) sensors that transformed movement into sound. This work led to collaborations with The Studio for Movement, Ballet Jörgen, and OCAD University’s Social Body Lab to further develop the technology. She later founded SonicWear, offering inclusive SOMO workshops that encouraged creative movement for all ages. In 2017, her focus shifted toward projects exploring forgiveness and healing from shame, using torn and stitched Japanese paper to create abstract tapestries. With support from the Ontario Arts Council, she partnered with St. Joseph’s Health Centre in 2021 to lead an eight-session online art and mindfulness workshop for patients with substance use disorders. She has since facilitated similar workshops with Workman Arts, Lakeshore Arts, and Arts Etobicoke. Faveri's current work delves into family narratives, exploring themes of forgiveness and healing through the careful transcription of letters and the creation of torn and machine-stitched paper portraits.”

#ExperienceTO: Sunnyside Historical Tour by Alex Roscanu

As per Eventbrite:

About Sunnyside: "The name “Sunnyside” had been used to denote a beach and its surrounding area for 70-plus years before the amusement park opened. The name may have been coined by George Howard, a prominent citizen whom in 1848 had built a home overlooking the shore on the sunny side of a hill. The Ocean House Hotel was built in 1884. It came to house a Bake-Rite shop, Laura Secord Candy Shop, Tamblyn Drugstore, and a United Cigar Store. Some of these early Canadian businesses would survive into the present to become country-wide chain stores. The structure itself, still stands at the corner of present-day Queen Street and Roncesvalles Avenue above what would generally become the amusement park and specifically, The Boulevard Club’s location. By the 1890’s the population was large enough to warrant the building of a streetcar service to the district, which was extended by new owners in 1893. One promotion started in that decade was the bathing-car service offered free to kids in the summer. They would pick up any children with bathing suits & towels and transport them free to and from the beach area west of Toronto." (Sunnyside Pavilion)

Join us for a FREE, public walking tour that will be a good experience for anyone: whether you’re 8 or 80 years old, and whether you’re a curious local, solo traveler, backpacker, part of a small groups of friends, or a newcomer.

WHEN

Saturday, December 6, 2025 at 11:00am. The tour will last approximately 90 minutes.

WHERE TO MEET

The tour will start on the lakefront side of the Sunnyside Pavillion (1755 Lake Shore Blvd W, Toronto, ON M6S 5A3).

Bites & Insights: Is dementia a vaccine-preventable condition? from McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA)

As per eventbrite:

“Is dementia a vaccine-preventable condition?

For most of us, dementia is one of the scariest parts of aging. There are ways to decrease your risk of dementia such as exercising, eating well, socializing, and keeping active, but those all take a sustained effort. What if I told you that there was an easy way to reduce your risk by about 20% that just took a couple of visits to the doctor or pharmacist? Recent research shows that vaccines for shingles, influenza, pneumonia and others reduces the risk of dementia and other health conditions. Sound to good to be true?

Join Dr. Dawn Bowdish, a Professor in McMaster’s Department of Medicine and Executive Director of the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health Come and learn about the science behind these surprising findings about infections and immunity, and how getting vaccinated can help in unexpected ways.

About the Bites & Insights Series

As we age, many of us want to know what we can do to stay healthy and live well. However, with an overwhelming amount of information available, it can be challenging to determine where to focus our efforts to achieve the greatest impact on our health and well-being.

Join researchers and experts from the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA) for Bites & Insights, a community talk series designed to share practical, evidence-based ways to stay healthy and engaged in the activities you enjoy as you age. Each session includes time for audience questions and open discussion. Light refreshments will be provided.

Bites & Insights is made possible through the generous support of the Hamilton Community Foundation.”

Online Lecture: Evalyn Walsh McLean & the Curse of the Hope Diamond By Road Scholar

Join Road Scholar on Monday, Oct. 27, 2025, at 1 p.m. (ET)/ 10 a.m. (PT), for a free one-hour lecture and Q&A to learn about Evalyn Walsh McLean and the curse of the Hope Diamond.

Evalyn Walsh McLean, an American mining heiress and socialite, was the famed owner of the 45-carat Hope Diamond — the world’s largest blue diamond when she purchased it in 1911 from Pierre Cartier in Paris. Rumored to carry a curse that brought misfortune to its owners, the diamond accompanied Evalyn everywhere, from White House gatherings to charity events. According to the Smithsonian Institution, where the gem is displayed at the National Museum of Natural History, there is no truth to the legends related to the curse. And yet, Evalyn Walsh McLean’s life was never the same after acquiring the Hope Diamond. Heartbreak and tragedy befell her, impacting every aspect of her life. Was the diamond to blame? Join Carolyn Crouch to explore the origins of the Hope Diamond’s supposed curse and its connection to the extravagant and reckless lifestyle of its larger-than-life owner.

Performance by The Smile Theatre - “Extraordinary” by Jim Betts - organized by St. Demetrius

Extraordinary by Jim Betts

‘Extraordinary (The Extraordinary Life Of An Ordinary Woman)’ is a charming musical about a woman celebrating her 90th birthday. What is unusual about this celebration is that she has invited her 18-year old self to join the party, wishing to be reminded of the hopes and dreams she had as a young woman. She set out to become “extraordinary", and learns how that happened in ways she never anticipated. This wonderful, personal musical was created by the playwright for his Mom when she turned 90, and is based on her life story.

Cost: $10/one show or $15 for both

Dates: Wednesday, October 15, 2025 and Thursday, December 18, 2025

Time: 2PM - 3PM

#ExperienceTO: Stock Yards Historical Tour by Alex Roscanu

As per Eventbrite:

"When the Western Cattle Market downtown became inadequate, a group of cattle dealers and businessmen from the Junction area agreed in 1902 to form the Union Stockyard Company. Very important to developments was the Rountree family, who were in real estate and cattle dealing with others in the Junction area; most were members of the West York Agricultural Association. By 1903, the alliance had acquired acreage at the southwest corner of the intersection, moved the existing houses across Keele Street to the east side, and opened the yards with frame and timber structures. A fire in 1908 destroyed most of these, but they were quickly replaced by others with concrete foundations and platforms. The CPR put in a spur line and gained a monopoly. The dealers wanted competition and invited the Grand Trunk Railway to install a spur north of St. Clair, leaving the CPR south of St. Clair. After much controversy, the railway board gave full clearance to the GTR to proceed. Packing houses – Gunn’s, the Harris Abattoir, and others – built along the north side of St. Clair. Maple Leaf arrived in 1927. Swift’s Canadian Company of Chicago had moved in by 1911, created a plant, and occupied most of a block. The stockyards expanded in 1908, 1913–14, and 1917–18 and took over property at Symes Road and St. Clair. During World War I, the stockyards had been taken over for military use as a corral for thousands of horses. The army controlled the site for five years until 1919. From almost the outset, the site had contained an important horse exchange, which remained throughout the war years and resumed normal operations after the war. In 1944, the Ontario government nationalized the stockyards as the Ontario Public Stockyards, then later as the Ontario Stockyards, expropriating the properties and compensating the former owners."
