Forest Bathing at the Garden by Toronto Botanical Garden

As per website:

Connect with nature and join us for a guided forest therapy walk!

Welcome Spring and rekindle your relationship with nature through a guided outdoor Forest Bathing walk with certified forest therapy guide Laura Bincik. At a slow pace and in community with other participants and the environment, you will be guided by a series of invitations throughout the experience to awaken your senses and intentionally connect with nature in the present moment.

We will gather briefly indoors to prepare for the walk and consider the origin of Forest Bathing as well as some of the benefits of the practice. When we venture into the Toronto Botanical Gardens and surrounding ravine, we will cover a loop of approx.1.5 Km on paved pathways, flat and bare ground, at times encountering uneven terrain, inclines and declines. It may be slippery! We will be strolling, standing and sitting (if you wish to). Your comfort and safety are most important! As this is an outdoor winter program at a slow pace, please ‘over’ dress for the weather and wear thermal socks and under layers, a sweater, a winter jacket, winter pants and sturdy winter boots. Mittens, a scarf and a winter hat are a must! You may wish to bring a day pack, water bottle, sunglasses, walking poles and/or a folding stool or sitting/kneeling pad.

As the walk ends, we will gather and partake in a seasonal tea, snacks and taste honey harvested at Toronto Botanical Garden.

This outdoor program runs in all conditions. In the case of severe or dangerous weather, you will be informed by TBG if program is cancelled as early as possible.

Washrooms are available onsite.

The program is suited for adults 18+. All participants must sign a liability waiver at the start of the program.

Friday, March 27 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Registration: Public $35, TBG Members $30 (plus applicable taxes and fees)

Is dementia a vaccine-preventable condition? with Dr. Dawn Bowdish

Join us for another installment of the popular Optimal Aging Portal webinar series, featuring guest speaker Dr. Dawn Bowdish, a professor with the Department of Medicine and Executive Director of the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health.

For many, dementia is one of the scariest parts of aging. While habits like exercising, eating well, and staying socially active help reduce risk, they require long-term effort. What if lowering your risk by about 20% could be as simple as a couple of visits to your doctor or pharmacist? New research shows that vaccines for shingles, influenza, pneumonia, and more not only protect against infection but also reduce the risk of dementia and other conditions.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about the science behind these findings and how vaccines play a role in healthy aging.

About our speaker:

Dr. Dawn Bowdish is a professor with the Department of Medicine and Executive Director of the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health.  She is a member of the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA), the McMaster Immunology Research Centre (MIRC) and the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research (IIDR). She also holds associate memberships with the departments of Biochemistry & Biomedical Sciences and Chemistry & Chemical Biology.  From 2014 to 2024, Bowdish held a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Aging and Immunity. Her research has appeared in more than 180 peer-reviewed publications and consists of over 17,000 citations.   She also runs the Bowdish Lab at McMaster where she mentors the next generation of infectious disease researchers.

This talk is part of the Optimal Aging Portal Webinar Series, a great resource of evidence-based healthy aging information, and is hosted by Dr. Anthony Levinson. All talks are recorded and archived for future viewing.
